The 2010-2011 school year marks the 15th anniversary our El Eden school in Piedras Negras, Mexico. El Eden was the first international school that FML ever built and the story of how it came to be is pretty amazing. In 1995, Elizabeth Weatherby met Magda Acosta at a Women of Vision meeting and the two discussed the possibilities and need for an FML school in a well-known drug community in Northern Mexico. Magda had shared with her about how drugs and violence had put many of the young children there at risk. It wasn’t too long after that conversation that Kells Sr. was on a plane to Mexico to build the school but there was a big catch… He only had enough to get the plane ticket and a mission team was to arrive two days later to help build the school. Something had to happen and quick.
After he had boarded the plane, Elizabeth started praying and something did happen. Before the plane touched down in Texas, all of the funds were available to build Feed My Lambs’ first international school. The mission team that soon followed had very little knowledge of how to construct a school especially one in the middle of the desert. But after the trip was over and the team was on its way home, a building had been built that could hold nearly 40 students. The birth of this school was nothing short of a miracle.
Since 1995, several more buildings have been constructed and that original school building has blossomed into a much larger schooling complex complete with administrative offices, many classrooms, a playground and even a small house onsite for the school groundskeeper. There are currently 250 students attending with more than 50 on the waiting list. The classes start as young as pre-kindergarten all the way up to the 6th grade. As far as education goes, the children who attend have shown accelerated learning and higher test scores over the years to such a degree it has been rated as a top-tier school and has received many awards and recognition from the northern state of Cohuila, Mexico. Since its inception, El Eden has surpassed every expectation that we could have ever imagined in the past 15 years. We are truly honored to be celebrating the anniversary of such a wonderful school!
